SHOULD A YOUNG ATHLETE PLAY MULTIPLE SPORTS? By Sue Veitch – SportsWorx Broward in Florida

I was recently reading a sports article where the subject was about whether or not a high school athlete should play multiple sports. When we were at the USSSA baseball tournament in Orlando recently, that question was also asked by some of the parents that visited our table.
The consensus among the university coaches that were asked this question in the article was that it is absolutely a good idea to participate in multiple sports, especially if you are a seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth grade student. Some of the reasons cited by these coaches were as follows; it gives a player the opportunity in his off season to further develop their understanding of the concepts of team play because the principals from these other team sports are exactly the same. The University of Southern California Football coach, Pete Carroll said “he wants guys that are so special athletically, and so competitive that they can compete in more than one sport”. This makes them a more valuable recruit. The track and field coach from the University of Florida said that versatility becomes very important especially when he is looking at how to divide the scholarships he has to work with. Once again an athlete who is talented in more than one area becomes a better recruiting prospect.
If you are an athlete just starting to build your resume of talent and skills then I would say you really need to look at being involved in more than one sport to prepare you for the time when you will begin to get seriously looked at. My son was a three sport player, football, baseball and basketball for his first three years in high school. He continued to play both baseball and football during his senior year. He received an athletic scholarship at a Division II school but when he was recruited by this school they looked at him for both their baseball program and their football program. He ended up playing football but it makes my point that this one university was very interested in him because he had the ability and talent to play in either sport.
