I was recently reading a sports article where the subject was about whether or not a high school athlete should play multiple sports. When we were at the USSSA baseball tournament in Orlando recently, that question was also asked by some of the parents that visited our table.
The consensus among the university coaches that were asked this question in the article was that it is absolutely a good idea to participate in multiple sports, especially if you are a seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth grade student. Some of the reasons cited by these coaches were as follows; it gives a player the opportunity in his off season to further develop their understanding of the concepts of team play because the principals from these other team sports are exactly the same. The University of Southern California Football coach, Pete Carroll said “he wants guys that are so special athletically, and so competitive that they can compete in more than one sport”.
