It seems to be the common perception that the best way to get a sport scholarship is to train and work hard at sports and wait to be discovered. Traditionally, this passive approach to the recruiting process has meant that athletes must rely on coaches and people in the community in order for them to be discovered by college coaches looking for athletes to play in their program.

Recruiting is a Four Year Process – Guideposts for the College Bound Student-Athlete
Many athletes have the desire to play sports in college, but don’t know where to begin or what to do. Simply stated, recruiting is a four year process. Preparation and education are every bit as important in marketing, and those who wait until their senior year find themselves behind the curve.
So what should you do each year in the process? Many tasks should begin in your freshman year, and these tasks should be revisited each year.

The Importance of Discipline; by Doug Ellis, CEO of SportsWorx
I was listening to a speech the other day in which the topic was the role that discipline plays in goal-setting. One of the main characteristics of self-discipline is the ability to forgo instant and immediate gratification and pleasure, in favor of some greater gain or more satisfying results. Self discipline gives you the ability to stick to your decisions and follow them through, without changing your mind, and is therefore one of the important requirements for achieving goals. Contrary to common belief, self-discipline is not a severe and limited behavior or a restrictive lifestyle. It is a very useful inner power, which enables one to persevere and not give up, in spite of failure and setbacks. It gives us self control, and the ability to resist temptations and distractions that tend to stand in the way of attaining aims and goals. Discipline is one of the most important pillars of real and stable success.

Q & A on AAU Basketball: by Ed Smith; SportsWorx of Greater Cincinnati
The growth and importance of AAU basketball in recruiting has jumped exponentially in the past 20+ years. It has reached a point where high school coaches are not the main contact for college coaches in the recruiting process in most instances. While a motivated, connected high school coach is still a valuable resource for parents and college coaches the world of AAU basketball plays an ever increasing role in the process.

College Commitments – What Do They Mean? – by Susan Veitch-SportsWorx of Broward Florida
I was reading an article the other day in the sports section of my local newspaper. It was entitled “commitments often far from done deal”. It really reinforced the idea that it is smart for any high school athlete to keep their door open and take the time to research and gather information about more than just one college or university that they have an interest in. Dave Brousseau is the writer for this article and he states “commitment is the most overused word during the high school football recruiting season. The recruiting process can be suffocating as colleges do their best to entice athletes in their direction”. Mr. Brousseau tells the story of a linebacker from our Dillard high school who verbally committed to the University of Connecticut, only to learn his position had been taken by a commitment just a few days earlier. Mr. Brousseau further writes that “nothing is set in stone until the commitment is inked on National Signing Day. Until then everything and anyone is fair game”. (more…)

Why You Should Use SportsWorx; By Doug Ellis; CEO
If you are a high school athlete who has the desire to play sports in college, there are many questions running through your head. It is difficult to know when to begin preparation for the process, how to prepare, when to really get started, and how to go about it. Even the “five star” athlete has never been through the process before and needs guidance in figuring out what to do.
Selecting a college is a decision that can impact you for the rest of your life. Quite often your college community forms the base for the personal and business relations you carry through life. So why select a school because a coach likes you?
It is important to understand how the process works, what to watch out for, and how to protect yourself. At SportsWorx, we equip our athletes with the education and guidance needed to make the recruiting process work for you.

SHOULD A YOUNG ATHLETE PLAY MULTIPLE SPORTS? By Sue Veitch – SportsWorx Broward in Florida
I was recently reading a sports article where the subject was about whether or not a high school athlete should play multiple sports. When we were at the USSSA baseball tournament in Orlando recently, that question was also asked by some of the parents that visited our table.
The consensus among the university coaches that were asked this question in the article was that it is absolutely a good idea to participate in multiple sports, especially if you are a seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth grade student. Some of the reasons cited by these coaches were as follows; it gives a player the opportunity in his off season to further develop their understanding of the concepts of team play because the principals from these other team sports are exactly the same. The University of Southern California Football coach, Pete Carroll said “he wants guys that are so special athletically, and so competitive that they can compete in more than one sport”. This makes them a more valuable recruit. (more…)

SportsWorx Assists Schools and Club Programs with Fundraising; by Mike Baggett – SportsWorx Northwest
Yesterday we discussed the new SportsWorx JV Package available through our recent partnership with CRONS. This relationship, along with some of our other corporate partnerships, allows SportsWorx to broaden our services to also assist high school and club athletics with one of your biggest challenges…program funding.
In order to help provide funding for athletics and reduce the elimination of teams, coaches, and athletes who can’t afford the rapidly increasing participation fees, SportsWorx has partnered with The CRONS Brand and others to provide additional income streams to fund athletics and to reduce the major operational costs of uniforms and practice gear, without sacrificing quality or service.

Games v. Practice; by Ed Smith – SportsWorx Cincinnati
While working a baseball showcase in the Cincinnati area I had the opportunity to listen to an interesting presentation given by Coach Jim Zerilla, a former Division 1 baseball coach.
Coach Zerilla was doing a great job covering many of the aspects of the recruiting process. He touched upon the importance of grades, how to interview coaches, what to look for in a college baseball program and self evaluation to find the right program for the athlete.
